On a journey to increase my knowledge regarding buddies club, I came across Mr. Summons. He is a great teacher who works with, and for, his students while running this club for them. He inherited the best buddy club over time and enjoys the idea of seeing students interacting together outside of the classroom.
I then asked some of the teens what they enjoyed about the club. What really mattered to all of them was meeting new friends. To quote sophomore Chelsea Taylor, “You can just help out other kids who need a friend.” Also, to quote another student, Bridget Burkhart said, “Just interacting with all of us members is great.” Courtney Westman, the head president, said, “The mission of our club is to connect our students with kids that have disabilities.” I also asked about their favorite things they did while at club. Some said making cookies at Christmas, others love dancing and a few said making paper zombies near Halloween. So, from what I could gather, they just want someone to come have a good time and be their friend. In my personal experience, I have just started this club a couple of months ago. Even though I might not know everybody's name yet, I have seen how much joy this club brings. This is a shock since there are barely any students in the club. I go for the friendship and the people like Bridget Burkhart and Chelsea Taylor. In my mind, you can never cease to be amazed by the things they will teach you and the relationships that form over time. The Wilson Best Buddies club, runs once a month on different days. The next meeting is on Thursday, March 21, from 3 P.M. to 4 P.M. in the upper house cafeteria. Go chill with our fellow special education students and have fun doing crafts. Join us this month and be the best buddy you can be!
