By Sarah Larkin Prom season is here! And with that comes promposals, where someone asks someone else to go to prom with them in a typically grand manner. Promposals have evolved to become more elaborate and innovative. Whether it be a proposal between friends, a couple, or two friends hoping to become something more than that, promposals are becoming a staple in high school culture. Wilson High School students stepped it up this prom season and came up with some creative ways to ask someone to go to prom. Lauren and Nick No one can go wrong with a solid pun and some pop culture references. Senior Lauren Kreuzberger asked her boyfriend Nick Lewars to prom by the only surefire way to a boy’s heart: tickets to a Future concert. Lauren’s promposal was centered around her sign that read “Just for Future reference…Can you and Migos to prom?” Of course, her references to rappers Future and Migos weren’t without justification; Lauren paired her sign with tickets to a Future concert that included some of Nick’s other favorite artists like Migos and Kodak Black. In order to create this promposal, Lauren had to consider the interests of her boyfriend and then find just the perfect concert. Once the tickets were found and the puns were made, Nick saying “yes” was the easy part! Marc and Caitlyn Some promposals are a little more complex, though, such as Junior Marc Chmielewski’s promposal to his girlfriend, Junior Caitlyn Christopher. Marc had the novel idea to 3D print a picture of Caitlyn in order to prompose. Before the actual promposal, Marc had a lot of work to do before executing the actual promposal. Marc looked into lithopanes after spotting one in a gift shop and thought that he could implement that with a while PLA filament. After figuring this out, Marc wrote a plug-in for the program OpenSCAD, which converts digital photos to black and white and then gives each pixel a hexadecimal tag according to the pixel’s placement on the color gradient. Using the plug-in he created, colors were assigned a layer height, which formed a rigid pattern allowing light in thinner regions and blocking light in thicker regions. This play on light causes the image to autoshade. All technicalities aside, the final product was an amazing 3D-printed image and a “yes” from Caitlyn! Whatever method is used for a promposal, it’s the thought that counts. Promposals are ultimately a show of affection for someone else whether in a romantic manner or in a platonic fashion. But if a flashy promposal isn’t your ideal situation, don’t be afraid to just ask someone to prom in a casual manner! And if you don’t feel comfortable asking someone at all, don’t be afraid to go to prom alone and have an unforgettable night!
