By Abby Wurster Whether you choose to disregard or retaliate against patriarchal values and misogynistic societies, the Wilson High School Feminist Society (WHSFS) welcomes you with open arms, regardless of your gender. The WHSFS stimulates comprehensive discussions about women’s issues within Wilson. The male and female members of the club brainstorm ideas to break gender stereotypes, encourage their peers to respectfully challenge destructive assumptions within the Wilson community, and attempt to promote one of their many fundraising activities or care drives during a productive meeting. Sarah Reinbrecht, a senior at Wilson and the leader of the club, says, “I aim to bring awareness to the issues women face while also promoting a safe place for young women to express their frustrations and feelings.” The club organized a bake sale to donate money to Camions of Care, an organization that helps provide feminine products to women in need. Their most recent care drive, which happened throughout the month of November, is cleverly named the “Flow Drive.”
The “Flow Drive” is an insightful drive aimed at helping distribute feminine necessities, such as tampons and pads, to lower income families and those who cannot afford them. Club leaders explain that “they (pads/tampons) are not luxuries; they're necessities.” By saying this, it is clear to see that the club wishes to promote a safe and comfortable environment for women. The club also organized a Feminist Walk where members (and others) walked around campus with signs promoting both their club and, most importantly, feminism. They have several more fundraising events planned that are yet to be set in stone. The club also arranges a “Feminist Friday” on Twitter where they feature a feminist in the community that was suggested by their Twitter followers. Their Twitter DM’s are open for any and all students or teachers who have a recommendation as to who they should feature. The men and women of WHSFS meet every Tuesday after school until 3:30 p.m. in Mrs. Taylor's room (E314), so if you have an interest for women’s rights, be sure to stop by and throw in your valued point of view!
