By Maggie Foight Question: “Schoolwork + extracurriculars = stress! What is the best way to deal with that type of stress?” Answer: Stressing out too much may not be good for your health, but twenty percent of American teens have to deal with it on a daily basis. Typically, being stressed can result in feeling overwhelmed, experiencing tension, having a higher heart rate, and getting clammy hands. The best way to deal with stress depends on the person, but some of the most effective ways to cope include exercising, limiting caffeine, stepping back from your workload, and getting enough sleep. Working out will give you time to yourself, and will help to distract you from your stressors. If you’re already in a sport, find time to go on a bike ride or walk - sometimes, being around others can increase stress if you are already anxious. Caffeine, found in coffee and sodas, can trigger panic attacks and anxiety as well as muscle twitches and aches. It’s defined as a psychoactive substance, albeit a legal one. While caffeine will keep you awake and energetic, choosing an alternative like lemonade or orange juice will lessen your anxiety. Taking a step back by taking deep breaths and/or counting to ten will also limit stress; doing so will help you recenter and relax. Prioritize your schoolwork and plan events ahead. Confusion and being pressed for time can both be stress factors. Finally, listening to quiet music, wearing warm sleepwear, or drinking warm milk will all help give to you the best sleep possible, which is critical for destressing.
Create a routine, too - switching your nightly and sleeping habits may contribute to stress and anxiety. If you stay awake late often, that could cause additional stress. Plan projects and homework ahead so you can get your eight hours. It all depends on who you are: what works for one person may not work for another. Hopefully this gives you somewhere to start, but do your own research to find the best fit for your situation! - Maggie Foight, advice columnist (Please fill out the survey under the advice column tab so we can continue to give you advice next month!)
