By Sarah Larkin Wilson students obviously have a lot of school spirit, and that was showcased in the first pep rally of the 2016-2017 school year. The entire Wilson student body came together to boost spirits before the homecoming football game that night. Between teachers dancing, cheerleaders chanting, and students competing, the school pride was almost tangible! Wilson’s spirit finds its roots in the school sports which were justifiably honored at the pep rally. As each fall sports team stood, the bleachers shook with excitement (especially when the entire football team stood up) as the winning record was announced. Some teams even had undefeated seasons like the Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams. But even the esteemed Wilson athletes had a little trouble with what the Spirit Club had in store: a water bottle flipping contest. With a nod to the modern sensation, the Spirit Club set up a relay race between teams of four to flip water bottles. Representatives from each grade were chosen along with athletes from some of Wilson’s sports teams to face off against each other with the task of flipping a water bottle then running back to his teammate. The Spirit Club continued to pay tribute to the competitive nature of Wilson students by having members of the Homecoming Court battle it out in a little game before they battle for the crown. In a classic “Minute to Win It” style game, some members of the court had boxes filled with ping pong balls taped to their hips with the task of emptying the bin without using their hands. In almost no time at all, both male members of the challenge shook out all the ping pong balls, leaving the students watching in awe. And the students were left in awe after hearing the seniors cheer their battlecry. In yet another competition to lift the spirits of the students, each Wilson graduating class had to yell a chant with led by the class’ respective cheerleaders. To no shock of the fully-hearing audience, the proud seniors won with their boisterous cries. By the end of the pep rally, everyone was shouting out and giggling as the Wilson Dance Team along with some of the Wilson staff showed off their dance moves for the students. Without a doubt, the pep rally riled students up for the Homecoming game that night. Maybe the teachers’ dancing helped the bulldogs win with such a marginal lead?
