By Akanksha Bhusari "Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership" - The Kiwanis Organization. Key Club has been one of the most popular community service clubs at Wilson for many years, and the 2015-2016 school year has much more in store for the club. Though it is unconventional, Key Club is being run by a group of five juniors that are dedicated to the club’s mission. President Zane Elgogari, Vice President Lindsey Gibbon, Secretary Lydia Yenser, Treasurer Lauren Yu, and Editor Rachel Krut are all excellent students who also participate in various activities such as band, orchestra, choir, select choir, golf, track, soccer, tennis, TSA, student government, Mini-THON, and Spanish and French Clubs. After having only 4 meetings so far, the Key Club has already accomplished so much. It conducted a very successful annual Red Cross Blood Drive, filling every donation spot available. The officers put hours of planning into the event and spent the whole day there to ensure that everything ran smoothly. Another annual upcoming event has raised high hopes throughout the club to help medicate woman and their children. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is a traditional Key Club activity with a goal of earning over “$300” this year hoping to provide kids with safe water, therapeutic milk, and protection from malaria. This year, the Key Club is also taking part in several other volunteer opportunities such as Mountain by Moonlight, a Halloween fest, and Fitzy’s 5K Run, a run to support brain tumor research. The officers have many more volunteer events planned for the future such as the Greater Berks Food Bank, a second Red Cross Blood Drive, a canned food drive, Christmas caroling, and visiting a senior living facility. They also plan on supporting early education by tutoring and youth programs with their theme of the “Youth Serving Youth.” This year's officers are truly improving the club. Not only do they communicate meeting info very well through emails, Rained Out, social media, and their website, they are really embracing the true mission of the club. They have introduced a new aspect of the club called “Key Clubber of the Month” which is an award given to the most active and dedicated member for the month. They are creating a sense of family for all the participants by serving the community together as a student body along with some fashionable t-shirt designs. As Lindsey Gibbon said in her campaign speech, “Remember, Key Club is the key to your success!” is really proving to be true. The hard work of these young, motivated officers is turning Key Club into the true key to a Wilson student’s success.
