By Maggie Foight Many students at Wilson hold jobs in the community, varying from lifeguarding to being a cashier. One student, a sophomore named Mia Serrano, works at Berks Lanes and was picked to be the February Female Student Feature because of her hard work both there and at school. For students, working is much different than it is for adults. After the shift, students don’t get to go home and relax for the rest of the night. Instead, they have the pressure of homework, extracurriculars, and studying laid on them, and sometimes, it becomes very overbearing. "I usually don’t have time to do my schoolwork on my work days right after school, so I end up staying up late at night to do any school work I have to get done,” Serrano says. If she weren’t so committed to work and school, Serrano could just drop her job, but that’s not what she’s planning to do.
“I chose to have [a job] because I wanted to start gaining experience with money and being more social and interactive with people,” says Serrano. “I just wish that there was time at my job where I can get at least thirty minutes of a break to do my school work.” Many working students will agree that juggling a job and school is a big task, but Serrano is able to get it done, albeit with a little pressure timewise. “Some days I feel kind of stressed because I get so much school work to do and it’s hard sometimes to do that and have to get ready to go to work at the same time,” she says. Serrano works diligently to get her duties at school and work done. While she’s doing very well at working hard, sometimes a break is very much needed. “I mostly find myself having free time on the weekends and on those days I like to allow myself to just relax and enjoy myself,” Serrano says. Certainly, a driven student like Serrano deserves a day off from her efforts. Nonetheless, the staff of the Paw Print hopes Mia Serrano continued success both in the work force and at Wilson High School!
