By Maggie Foight At the beginning of the school year, it’s always difficult for freshmen students to get used to their new surroundings. Classes become more difficult, there’s a new set of teachers, and the workload here at Wilson High School is heavier than at either of the middle schools. The freshman female student feature for this month, Erin Moyer, had to adapt like any other, and she gave the Paw Print some insight on the feelings of freshmen. On the first day of school, Moyer admits she was nervous. She said she was anxious about meeting new teachers and making it to class on time. Now, she feels more comfortable in her work zone, despite some stressors. “One [stressor] is trying to get homework done on time and before I have to go to work or practice,” Moyer says. She was a part of the Wilson swim team this past winter, and if having the school day then practice right after didn’t tire her out, the homework load to do at home did. However, Moyer was able to find time to do it all.
On the topic of stress, she says, “I have gotten better with [stress] now. I have been able to hang out with my friends and family over the weekend and [holiday] breaks because I plan things out and think ahead. During the season, I learned to put my phone away and get my homework done before going to practice so I didn’t have to worry about it when I got back.” While homework is not graded here at Wilson, most teachers do expect it to be done so they can move on to a new topic the next day instead of reinforcing the previous day’s lesson. Moyer understands this and says she does her best to understand the material in class and work on the homework to gain an even better understanding. Addressing the beginning of the year, Moyer says, “I was able to stay with it and complete as much as I could, but sometimes, you do fall through and forget to do something.” She understands that if she isn’t able to handle it all in one day, then there’s the next day to take care of it. Finally, Moyer gives praise to other students, her teammates, and her older brothers for helping her to become a better student-athlete. “The upperclassmen [in general] have been a big help. In sports, I got to know these kids [better] and they are just amazing… I [also] learned from my older brothers that if you go to college, you have to get used to doing homework because it is graded.” Overall, Erin Moyer has been having a great freshman year, and she has adapted amazingly to the high school standards.
