By Erin Endres Once every year, the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) has American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) programs that allow students to take high school mathematics examinations in order to develop and enhance problem-solving skills. According to their website, the program is designed to help students strengthen their own mathematical abilities and attain careers in an innovative society as our “next generation of problem-solvers.”
Both of the exams offered at the high school level consist of 25 multiple choice questions that the student has a total of 75 minutes to answer. The two exams are the AMC 10 and the AMC 12. High school students in 9th or 10th grades can take the AMC 10 which focuses on the math you learn in those two grades. This exam assumes that its test takers have knowledge and test taking capabilities on the following topics: basic geometry, elementary algebra, elementary number theory and elementary probability. It excludes questions regarding trigonometry, advanced geometry, advanced algebra and calculus. The other exam available for high schoolers is the AMC 12. As opposed to the AMC 10, this exam includes the entire mathematics curriculum learned in high school. It covers and goes beyond advanced topics such as trigonometry, advanced geometry and advanced algebra. However, like the AMC 10, it also doesn’t include problems regarding calculus. Out of Wilson students who took the AMC 12, first place goes to Sashank Sridhar. Following in second place is Krishna Nayak and third place was awarded to Shreya Agrawal. Out of everyone at Wilson who took the AMC 10 exam, Luke Kline received first place. Noah Barndt won second place and in third place was Joel Loos and Colby Snyder. The Paw Print would like to congratulate all students who participated and scored highly in the exams and to encourage our readers to do the same, as well.
