By Maggie Foight For this issue’s Female Student Feature, the student talks about time management. For all high schoolers at Wilson, making good use of time is essential. Becoming distracted or off-topic can create high piles of homework, and when said students are involved in extracurriculars as well, the result is inevitably a very long night. Aprille Mohn, a senior at Wilson, is enrolled in online courses as well as advanced placement courses this year. With piles of homework and much to do, Mohn uses excellent time management to keep her head above it all. “It’s a great skill for students,” she says. “Being able to manage it well is definitely the most important for busy students.”
When asked about how she is able to stay on task to complete all on her mental to-do list, Mohn says, “I’m pretty fortunate that once I start something, I stay focused. I try to block out external sounds so I don’t get distracted. I make sure I work on my school Chromebook so I can’t get off topic.” For students that don’t have great time management naturally or those that stress over the mountains of work, Mohn advises: “Make lists and prioritize. Recognize that sleep is very important!” Other common ways to improve one’s time management include limiting surrounding sounds. Constant noise can cause distraction. Also, finding one space to always work in will help the brain switch into “work mode,” and it will be easier to focus and get tasks done quickly. Removing one’s phone from the room can also help. Procrastination, however, leads to further stress when there is already a lot to do. Dictionary.com’s definition of procrastination is the habit of delaying something requiring immediate attention. Habits like procrastinating are difficult to break, especially if it’s something that adds up the more one does it. If a student falls into a procrastination trap, Mohn says, “Depending on the teachers, if there’s too much, you should talk to them. They want you to learn, not break down.” To summarize her views, Mohn says, “If you have good time management, be thankful because it’s genuinely the most helpful for reducing stress.”
