By Leah Borelli As of December 3, 2015, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that the Department of Defense will be opening all jobs in combat to women. This means that women are able to join the Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces, the Marine Corps Infantry and other Special Operations Units. In order to field the best forces, Carter said that it “requires drawing strength from the broadest possible pool of talent." Hundreds of women have won awards for valor under fire, and military women have seen combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, with at least 161 killed. Along with this new opportunity comes the discussion on whether women should be required to register with the Selective Service System, as all men from the ages of 18-25 have been required to do so since 1980. Both the commandant of the Marine Corps and the Army chief of staff have recommended including females in registration.
