Why Veganism is the Way to GoBy Leah Borelli According to the Vegan Society of the UK, veganism is “a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing and any other purpose.” Approximately 94.5% of the US population relies on meat on a day to day basis for food, clothing and countless other purposes. In a country that depends so heavily on animal products, why would anyone think about completely omitting animal products from their life? The answer may be surprising, as veganism provides an astounding number of benefits for people, animals, and the environment. Going vegan may seem far-fetched, or even impossible. However, veganism has endless health benefits that might convince the skeptic to change his or her mind. Studies have shown that eating animal fats and proteins raises a person’s risk of hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. With a vegan diet, these risks are limited and provide benefits that an animal-based diet cannot provide. Not only does a vegan diet exclude animal products and the risks that come along with them, it also removes trans fats, vegetable oils, and refined grains and sugars.

By Ersha Kumar According to CBS News and a New York Times Poll about the Democratic Party nominations, 48% of democratic primary voters are in favor of seeing Hillary get the democratic nomination for president. However, if we rewind back to September of last year, Hillary was up another 10%. What happened in the past five months to knock Hillary down from having the majority of democratic voters under her thumb? Enter dark horse and Vermont senator Bernie Sanders. With only 8% of democratic voters backing him up at the beginning of last year, according to Quinnipiac University, his support has increased by 33%, putting him right behind Hillary. So this then begs the question: does Bernie Sanders really have a chance? Multiple high schoolers say yes. “The senator from Vermont has garnered a huge audience. Not only that, but his campaign is funded primarily on supporter donations. He has garnered well over 60 million dollars through his donations. In addition, his rallies have been some of the most impressive ones, drawing over 15,000 people at them,” says junior Andy Kucenski. “With influence like that, there's no doubt Sanders has a chance.” Why Taking a Gap Year May be a Good Choice for YouBy Claudia Barnard and Victoria Gibbs After high school it can feel like one’s life choices are already laid out - attend college, join the military, join the workforce, or none of the above. However, there is one other option that has been deemed somewhat unpopular in American society - taking a gap year. Taking a gap is typical for high school graduates in other countries - but what exactly is a gap year? A gap year is when a student takes an entire year, most commonly between high school and university, and devotes it to either traveling, volunteering, working, or just relaxing. In countries like Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Japan and the United Kingdom, gap years are custom - sometimes they are even encouraged as a way for students to uncover their personal and career interests before spending their money on secondary education. |
