By Amanda Le As of 2016, Wilson High School has adopted an activity period schedule in which occurs on the sixth day of a cycle. This new resource period brought up questions on what its purpose may be and how it would affect students and teachers. Wilson's deliberate decision to have an extended period was for the sole goal of having all students and teachers realign their hectic schedules, comprised of sports or various other activities, to catch up with academic work. "I like it a lot!" Kailey McDonald, a junior at Wilson, commented. The majority of the students seem to agree. "It's a good idea" Zachary Jackson, another junior, said, "but in the beginning of the year, the activity period is not being used to its full potential, and it's not in full swing. In any case though, it will be very helpful for students in the future." Indeed, it is very helpful. Lesley Vargas mentioned that it is beneficial for students who do not always have the time to study or make up tests. "Many students are doing sports, theater, clubs, and other extracurriculars to dedicate his or her time to." Essentially, for many high schools in America, students are not given enough time after school to see their teachers due to other activities. With more time spent devoted to school rather than giving students a time to breathe would significantly decrease the spirit and morality for students. Also a junior, Camryn Sheasly said, "Overall, it allows for downtime, so they can destress or reset themselves." Gillian Herzog, junior, said, "Not only would students receive benefits, but it also would help the teachers because of the activity period's flexibility." Teachers are grateful for the activity period as well. Mr. Filer, math teacher of Wilson, said, "If the students are using it properly, it would give them a great opportunity. Generally, I love it!" Mrs. Koch, library secretary, added, "It's an interesting concept. If the new activity period is used for good purposes, it would benefit a lot of kids who are involved in more activities after school." Students should take advantage of this opportunity to manage their schedule. Many students agree that they have less weight off his or her own shoulders since the activity period is always available to them. There will be less worrying for plans after school that is presumptively without transportation or not having enough time in the day to study. Junior Hope Sullivan said, "It enables me to have extra time. It gives me a breather. I don't have to cram things into my schedule." She also mentioned that the new activity period won't hinder students from furthering his or her education. The couple of minutes taken from each class to fit a single activity period in a sixth day cycle is insignificant. Ultimately, the activity period would allow BCTC students to have some study time. Although it's purpose is not intended for socialization, Wilson's implementation of the activity period made the school more enjoyable to attend for students.
