By Kaitlyn Fehr On November 8, 2016, after a full year of election coverage and campaigning, the world found out that the next president of the United States would be Donald Trump. Despite Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote, Trump won more electoral votes - 279 compared to Clinton’s 228 - and became the President-elect. This is now the fifth time that the electoral college has voted a candidate that does not have the popular vote into office. The next day, November 9th, was filled with students cheering and shouting for President Trump, as well as students crying because Hillary Clinton lost. While no acts of violence or outright protesting happened at Wilson, many schools across the country, and even some in Pennsylvania, saw students harming others and acting out both in support of Trump and against him. When asked about the election, the students at Wilson had mixed reactions, and some didn’t even care. Kayla Addison, a junior, upon being asked about Trump winning said, “When I found out that Donald Trump won the election I was disappointed and hurt. I was disappointed that so many American people voted for this man who on many occasions spoke ill of the groups of people that I align with. It hurt to know that I'm going to have to look at this man as the face of our country for the next four years. It hurts to know that he may take away what we worked very hard to achieve. I was hurt because I honestly thought that America was getting better, closer to accepting differences and that eight years of a black president showed the U.S.'s great strides, and having a woman president was going to show even more of our progress. Unfortunately, she did not win and knowing that this man who has made vulgar comments about women just shows how much America hasn't changed.” When asked how he felt about Trump winning, Ian Williams said,”I was nervous at first because he has no experience but whatever happens happens. It’s different, it can be a good thing or a bad thing, and we won’t know until it happens.” Andrew Mayer, a junior, simply said, ”I really don’t care about the elections, but if I had to pick I would probably want Trump. I guess I’m happy that he won.” Bryce Ciemiewicz said,”I’m glad Donald Trump won, he is the essence of the American dream, to be rich and famous. I feel as though he will lead this country to be more prosperous than it ever was before from his years of being a businessman.” Abby Wurster, a junior, said only, “I just think it’s going to be George W. Bush all over again.” While Trump will not actually become the President until January 20, it’s clear that students at Wilson already have strong opinions about the future of a Trump presidency.
