By Taylor Schutt President Trump accused Barack Obama of wiretapping his phones during the election last year in a tweet. Instead of going to the news (something he has not done since he was elected), he thought it would be a smart idea to tweet that our former President illegally spied on him. Pres. Trump also referred to this as “Nixon/Watergate” and “McCarthyism,” and stated that Obama was a sick, bad man. He obviously tweeted about Obama to deflect the rumors about Russia fixing the election in his favor and that his associates had and still have business ties with Russia. An Obama spokesman actually spoke about this, saying that it is not legal to order a wiretap against a citizen of the U.S. If one wanted to do that, the Justice Department would need to seek permission from Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court. Kevin Lewis stated that there was a rule against interfering with Justice Department cases, so no one ordered wiretapping on any U.S. citizen. A few days after this came to light, President Donald Trump asked Congress to investigate these allegations. Due to the fact that no one really believed him, the President was stuck. Sen. John McCain pressured Trump into supplying more information about these allegations to the public. After a while, the public believed that the White House backed Trump’s tweets. Sean Spicer, or Spicy (Thanks SNL), told the reporters that the President did not mean wiretap in a literal sense but that he was under surveillance. He also claimed that Trump did not mean to single out Obama, but to blame the whole Obama administration. All of this happened due to a tweet, written by someone who should not be tweeting himself. Comey, the head of the FBI, publicly stated that there was no proof to the tweets. Due to this, this whole controversy seemed to settle until Rep. Nunes declared that the intelligence community did collect information on U.S. citizens as well as people in the Trump administration. He also said that none of the surveillance shed light on Russia in any way. Another member of the committee stated that the chairman’s actions raised doubts on whether the House intelligence committee could be impartial or not. I believe that Obama did not wiretap anyone. I truly believe that this is all Donald Trump making up rumors and scandals so we look the other way about something else during his shady presidency.
