By Milo Payen The chain-retailer Toys R Us, once a titan in the field of toy retail stores, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017. The company had been struggling for the past couple of years. With the downfall of this major toy company, how will it affect parents who still wish to give their children the same kind of childhood they experienced? For years, Toys R Us had been a major attraction and a fantasy held deeply in the hearts of many children throughout the United States. With the famed toy retailer collapsing, adults stand to lose a major and convenient outlet to entertain their kids and help feed their imagination. However, parents have more control over helping the company get back on track than they think they do. Since the news broke out, there has been a huge outburst on social media of nostalgia for the toy retailer and people mourning what they view as one of the best parts of their childhood. Consumers have the power to turn their fond memories and desire to see Toys R Us survive into helping the company, if they so choose. They can decide between holding on to a relic of their own childhood to pass onto their children, or they can choose to completely abandon the once beloved toy company, instead turning towards online shopping, electronics and many new modern styles of shopping that have taken over the market. This competition with an industry that was not nearly as large of a threat years ago, along with other toy manufacturers has hurt the company deeply. Simple hope and reminiscing the fond memories isn’t what’s going to save Toys R Us. Rather, what would save it is a new commitment to the company from consumers who are increasingly finding it easier to take their shopping for gifts, toys and other means of entertaining their children. To an extent, it’s become too easy in society for people to hand a smartphone or a tablet to a child to entertain them instead of providing them with something that can help add to their imagination. It’s possible that this day and age has no place for Toys R Us to thrive in the market, but that is yet to be seen. If parents truly mean it when they say they wish to save Toys R Us, they must recommit themselves to teaching their kids to keep a sense of imagination when keeping themselves busy, to send them to a place where they can create fantasies and stories for themselves and make sure that the next generations childhood is as magical as it can be.
