By: Marina BiltcliffOver time, many different musicals have hit the big stage, and some of them have really blown us all away. I decided I wanted to list my personal top 10 musicals of all time. Making these choices were very difficult, and I had to leave out some that I really do love. In tenth place comes “The Lion King” on Broadway. This new classic musical has the highest revenue from a musical of all time, which is extremely impressive. Another thing about this show is that it has quite a large following, and it has been on tour many times.
The ninth place goes to “Waitress The Musical.” Although this musical might not sound all that exciting, it is one that really encapsulates the viewer. From the plot to one of everybody’s favorite chick flick films to having beautiful songs and characters, this show is one that you cannot forget about, especially since it is, sadly, closing on Jan. 9, 2020. The next ranking goes to one of my personal favorites, “Chicago.” This show has been on the Broadway stage since 1996 and has definitely deserved its spot there. The show is, and always will be, a classic thanks to its catchy songs and the risqué nature of the show. For No. 7, I rank “Mean Girls” on Broadway. Although it doesn’t seem that this show would be all too exciting, the Broadway version maintains the movie’s awesome pettiness that makes it as popular as it is. This show has been open since August of 2018 and has just started its national tour. All in all, it’s definitely a show that you don’t want to miss out on. Our sixth place goes to “Dear Evan Hansen.” This hit-show has a beautiful plot about Evan Hansen, a lonely highschooler who struggles with social anxiety disorder. Evan is a character that a lot of teens can relate to, and the melodic tunes it features accompanies the musical wonderfully. At No. 5, we have the classic “West Side Story” which tells a story of the forbidden love of two teenagers from rival New York gangs. This show has touched the hearts of many and is actually set to revive itself in December of 2019. In fourth place, I’ve chosen “Wicked” which has remained a hit musical for over 16 years. (So clearly, other Broadway fans agree with me.) The show debuted on Oct. 30, 2003 and is still going strong. The story is basically the prequel to the classic, “Wizard of Oz”, only it tells the Wicked Witch of the West’s story rather than Dorothy. “Wicked” showcases songs that everyone knows and loves (even if you haven’t seen the show) like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular”. Coming in at a close third place is “Cabaret.” Although this show might not be on the big stage at the moment, it still has one of my personal favorite storylines of all time. This show tells a beautiful story about a singer at a nightclub in Berlin Germany, Sally Bowels and her aspires to become an actress. Throughout the course of the story, many controversial topics are brought up, but the show is so open about them which is why the show is so revolutionary. From its beautiful heart wrenching plot lines, to its catchy tunes, this show is one that should never be forgotten. In 2nd place is “Hadestown”. This show may be new, but it really tells a beautiful story about falling in love. The plot takes place during the time of the greek gods, and tells the tragic love story of Orpheus and Eurydice. Although the plot might not sound all that exciting, it really leaves an impact on its viewers, looks can be deceiving as the show’s beautiful score, perfect casting and heart-breaking story line. Finally, ranking at my personal number one spot is the classic “Phantom of the Opera.” This show has remained on the big stage for almost 32 two years. The story is about an opera in Paris, France, that is haunted by a Phantom. This Phantom falls in love with one of the girls in the opera, Christine Daae, and will do anything to be with her. From its iconic songs like Phantom of the Opera and Think of Me, to its eire plot, this show has continued to stay on top for over three decades, making this the No. 1 show in my book. Although all of these decisions were extremely hard to make, I feel like I created a pretty solid list of shows. including some new shows like Mean Girls and Hadestown, but always remembering the classics like Cabaret and Phantom of the Opera. Overall, each show on Broadway tells a different story, and each one leaves its fans touched.
