By Jaimin Patel It all started from the splitting of a simple nuclei of a fissile element. An atomic bomb: a menacing word that drives horror into the hearts of many, especially the ones affected during World War II. Fortunately, nuclear weapons have been banned due to the mass devastation they caused. The Arms Control and Disarmament Act of 1961 was passed by legislation and signed by President John F. Kennedy to aid the world in prohibiting the use these apocalyptic armaments. Looking at the past events that have shaken history on earth as we know it, nuclear weapons should never, in any circumstance, be legal. When looking back at World War II the atomic bombs dropped on Japan showcase the destruction and the extent to which these nuclear weapons have the ability to cause widespread castraphoes. Even though the actual explosion of a nuclear weapon seems unfathomable, the radioactivity that is spread throughout the area can cause complications for years to come. Radioactivity is not able to be sensed without an instrument called a Geiger Counter. Our bodies cannot taste it, smell it, or feel it… making it so dangerous. Exposure to radiation can even cause mutations in our cells and lead to tumors in the body resulting in cancer. Japan is still facing the health effects of radiation years after the atomic bombs were dropped. Many hypothesise that the use of nuclear weapons would lead to a post-apocalyptic world where war is the norm. Eyes are on North Korea due to their nuclear testing program and threats to launch them onto the United States as well as their southern counterpart. We can only hope and do everything we can to stop a catastrophe like this from occurring again. Radiation poses a great threat whether it is through nuclear weapons or nuclear power plants. During the meltdown of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in current day Ukraine, over 600,000 people were exposed resulting in 4,000 deaths. This shows the massive amount of danger that comes with the use of nuclear energy. Throughout history, nuclear weapons have never failed to bring about distress and destruction proving that they are a force to never use.
