By Riona Mackey-Wood The only thing that starts change is taking action. The people representing our country, currently in office, are not doing a good enough job keeping us safe. How can America be great when its children are not safe? The government is seemingly incapable of taking action, so we the students have started to take charge. We’ve organized walkouts and marches and we will continue to peacefully protest until some change is taken. Conservatives believe, incorrectly, that students want to completely repeal the 2nd amendment. We just want to feel safe and secure. We believe that making the age to buy a gun higher, as well as encouraging actual, effective background checks that prevent people who have been flagged from buying a gun, will help our circumstances. The government has made it even easier to buy a gun for someone flagged by repealing an act put in place by President Obama. The former law had prevented those flagged for possible violence or terroristic tendencies from purchasing any type of gun. Students need to be even more involved. We have made changes, but I know we can do more. All of the candidates up for reelection are voicing opinions on this issue because they realize that people care -- that we care, we the future of this country. People are paying attention to us because we are not letting this go, nor should we. We demand respect alongside change in the way guns are handled, and I think our speaking up and speaking out on this topic is vital to the gun reform movement. Let us walk out, let our voices be heard; if you try to push us down, I can guarantee we will scream ever the louder and you will hear us. Photos Courtesy Of: Wikimedia Commons; flickr.com
