By: Amelia FortunatoThe Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlaws discrimination based on sex, color, race, religion or national origin. Currently, in Washington, D.C., the Supreme Court is considering whether this act applies to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender + (LGBTQ+) people in the workplace. According to a study done by the Human Rights Campaign, 31 percent of LGBTQ+ workers say they feel unhappy or depressed at work. 53 percent hear jokes about lesbian or gay people at least once in a while from coworkers. The top reason they don’t report these comments is that they don’t think anything would be done about it. This shocking statistic only goes to show that LGBTQ+ workers are in need of protection in the workplace. Everyone deserves to feel safe when doing their job, and LGBTQ+ people are no exception to this rule.
