By Sara WilliamsonAre people becoming desensitized to violence and trauma? Short answer, yes, they are. But why are people becoming so desensitized to violence? Could it be the fault of the Internet? Maybe it’s just the world we live in. Today's world is riddled with violence, with all the war and hate in today's world, some would say violence is normal. It's possible the world's always been this way, who knows? who knows? Let's look into these ideas a little bit further. The Internet is a factor everyone likes to blame for violence in the world. Everyone uses the Internet, including celebrities, news anchors, musicians, artists, the general public and even children. With so many people from so many different backgrounds all on the Internet, you’re bound to come across some violent things. Then again, that isn’t entirely the Internet's fault. There are ways to make sure you won't have to see violence on the Internet. Some may think the Internet should be more censored; however, you can’t censor the world from the people in it. The Internet just makes it a little easier to see all the bad things going on. Let’s talk about the world we live in for a little bit. How would you view the world? Is it a peaceful place? A war-ridden place? Think about it for a little. Some look at the world through rose-tinted glasses. The only problem with that outlook on life and the world is that every red flag just looks like a flag. To say that the world isn’t a violent place is very ignorant. With everything that happens in today's world, actually, with everything that has ever happened throughout history, you cannot sit there and say that the world isn’t violent. Violence is woven throughout our history. I’m not trying to say that good things don’t happen. So many good things happen every day, but we cannot sit down and say that the bad things don’t happen. We have to acknowledge these acts of violence to help stop them, but when you’re surrounded by violence you become less shocked by it. Violence has lost its shock value and probably for the best, too. If everyone got scared and wound up by every little act of violence many people would be too scared to leave their own houses. Better become used to violence and still be able to live our lives than become hermits because we're too afraid of the world we live in. Everyone deals with violence and trauma differently. We can’t expect everyone to react the same way because everyone is different. You can blame the media or even the world all you want, but at the end of the day, nothing is going to change unless we, the people, do something about it. We can’t act like everything is alright in the world when it’s obviously not, and nothing is going to change if we acknowledge the problem but are too scared to do anything about it. Violence isn’t a new thing. It’s been around since the beginning of everything, but rather than focus on our view of it, let's do something about it.
