By Jada Butler It's third period and you are sitting in a study hall. Your stomach is growling and your energy is too low. You haven't eaten since dinner the night before, skipping breakfast because you were rushing out the door to catch your bus to school, and your lunch is last period - the struggles of being a high school student.
It is convenient for our school to have vending machines full of healthy snacks and drinks to help us throughout the day, but how helpful are they when they can only be accessed during the five minute scramble between classes? The answer - not so helpful. It was a shock and an inconvenience when I was turned away by an assistant principal to go to the vending machine during my fourth period study hall in the Lower House. While it is understandable that teachers wouldn't want students interrupting a lecture or lesson to go to the vending machine, it seemed outrageous to me that I could not take five steps out the door to go to a vending machine right across the hall during a study hall. A majority of the students in study hall don't even study at all, and instead are holding conversations about either what they did last weekend or their plans for the next, so who are we interrupting then?
The irrational fear of students running rampant in the hallways is an illusion, as the vending machine is right in the line of sight. Stand at the doorway if you are so paranoid! Instead, I was forced to wait the entirety of the fifty-two minute long period, just to wait two more minutes in a line to use the vending machine and then hustle-bustle my way up to my next class in the E-Wing. I'm not the only student hungrily anticipating for a chance to get my snacks. "I get hungry during study hall," says Alex Keller, junior. While her study hall is in the Upper House cafe, the same issue stands. The cafeteria stops serving breakfast as soon as the second bell rings at the start of third period. There is simply no time to sign in and grab something to eat. For the sake of student health, let us have our snacks!
