By Erin Endres The 2016 Republican presidential candidates are very outspoken, and one of these candidates this year that has stuck out is Dr. Ben Carson. Dr. Carson is a very bright neurosurgeon who retired in 2013. However, he continuously makes a fool of himself by saying extremely controversial things on camera. Going through the internet to find such instances was not a hard task, as I could I easily found countless quotes and remarks that made me laugh out loud. Through these comments he has made his lack of government experience, and a filter, very clear. On many occasions he has compared things to slavery, compared democrats to Nazis, thanked God for dead soldiers, stated that homosexuality is a choice, and that is just scratching the surface. During a CNN interview on March 4, 2015, Carson argued that homosexuality is a choice and not biological “because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight, and when they come out, they're gay.” First of all, Dr., there is absolutely no conclusive evidence to support the statement that “a lot of people” make a switch like that in prison. In addition, homosexuality is not something you can simply obtain through an experience in prison, nor is it a choice for any person to make.
In September 2014, Carson claimed that the AP U.S. History curriculum will cause students to join a violent terrorist group because they learn about civil disobedience in the U.S. "I think most people when they finish that course, they'd be ready to go sign up for ISIS,” Carson claims. By definition, civil disobedience is a form of peaceful protest. ISIS, on the other hand, is an extreme terrorist group. Personally, I don’t see a connection between peaceful protests and violent terrorist groups, but apparently Ben Carson does, and this is not even to mention the notion of censorship with education curriculums. Ben Carson should really try to think a bit before he speaks in public. He has said, “Anyone caught involved in voter fraud should be immediately deported and have his citizenship revoked.” This may seem smat until you actually think about it. If a person commits voter fraud, then they are not a citizen. How can a person have their citizenship revoked if they aren’t a citizen in the first place? What Ben Carson said in November 2014 makes basically no sense if you actually think about what he is suggesting. Another instance where Ben Carson said something completely inconsiderate and thoughtless was in 2013 at the Values Voter Summit. Dr. Carson stated, “You know Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery. It is slavery, in a way, because it is making all of us subservient to the government, and it was never about health care. It was about control.” He went out of his way to bring up slavery and compare it to Obamacare. In my opinion, Obamacare is not even close to being about control. It was created to help those who couldn’t afford expensive health care, and is in no way close or relative to slavery. If I or anyone I loved needed brain surgery, Ben Carson would be a prime candidate for the job. Dr. Carson’s experience and performance in that field is extraordinary and nearly unmatched. However, he is definitely not someone I want as President of the United States. His severe lack of government experience is obvious and costly when it comes to debates and public speaking. A person cannot bring up such controversial topics and thoughtless remarks and still expect to lead an entire nation.
