By Brendan Wetmore Dear Nicole Arbour, you are not funny, you are not being profound, and you are definitely not helping anyone. Nicole Arbour, a social media celebrity and self professed “comedian," released a highly controversial video this month entitled “Dear Fat People,” in which she repeatedly insults and attacks heavy people. The video was easily a transparent grab at the press’s attention, and if she wanted to be featured on Wendy Williams’ “Hot Topics” or have hundreds of negative articles written about her, then she has certainly achieved her goal. The “bomb of truth” she says she has dropped has angered millions of people. However, it's unclear to me what this “bomb of truth” was. The topic of weight loss, weight gain and fitness have wreaked havoc on the American psyche for generations. That new diet pill and this new treadmill... Nicole Arbour is the type of person who takes advantage of these damaging ideals and shouts them out for everyone to hear. She says she’s a comedian, but the only funny thing about her video is how disillusioned and blind she is to her severe lack of humor. Nicole Arbour is unoriginal. The sloppy video demonstrates this. Clips are put together in such a haphazard way that makes it obvious she is grasping for cheap laughs. The video begins: she tells an anecdote about watching “The Walking Dead." She makes zombie noises. The video veers straight into train-wreck territory then as she tells stories about overweight families in the airport, desperate for laughs from the 11-year-olds who actually enjoy her brand of “comedy." If one muted the video, it would resemble a children’s program that one might watch on Nick Jr. Is Nicole Arbour the next host of “Blues Clues”? Overall, the insults she hurls at people who are obese aren’t nearly as embarrassing as her attitude and internet persona. These insults include, but are not limited to, “Fat-shaming is not a thing. Fat people made that up. That’s the race card with no race,” and, “If we offend you so much that you lose weight, I’m okay with that. You are killing yourself. Yeah, I’ll sleep at night.” The stories she tells are obviously false, and her call to action is one that is harmful but outright ridiculous; Nicole Arbour encourages her viewers to fat shame others. Though at the core of her video, she is not trying to get this message out. She really just wants the views that the world has now given to her. So, if you are truly outraged by the video, stop watching it! Comments are closed.
