By JaJuan Hook If I told you at the beginning of the NFL season that the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos were headed to Super Bowl 50, you would think I was crazy. After winning their conference championships, they are meeting up on February 7 to battle it out for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. While Denver had to hang on in the final seconds of the AFC Championship Game to solidify a 20-18 win against the New England Patriots, the Carolina Panthers jumped out to a 17-0 lead against the Arizona Cardinals and then cruised to a 49-15 win. This year’s matchup is going to be old-school vs new-school. Denver is playing in their (record-tying) eighth Super Bowl , while Carolina is playing in its second. Peyton Manning will be playing in conditions that he is used to, while Cam Newton is just starting to hit his prime. The Carolina Panthers have one of the best defenses in the NFL-and arguably best cornerbacks in the NFL, Josh Norman-but superstars will find a way to deliver those balls. If anyone is able to chuck the ball down the field and get it into a receiver's hands against a solid defense, it is Peyton Manning. No one really expected Manning to play as good as he did against the Patriots, but Manning had one of his best games since Week 3. One touchdown for the Denver Broncos is not going to guarantee them a win. Peyton Manning is used to being the MVP, and he might not be the MVP of the Super Bowl, but if one thing is certain, it is that Manning still knows how to throw a pass. MVP OF THE SUPER BOWL The MVP of this years Super Bowl is going to Cam Newton. Cam Newton became the first quarterback to throw for at least 30 touchdowns and rush for at least eight during the regular season. If he continues to play this “hot,” then he is going to win the MVP award. After Newton finishing the second half of the regular season on a good pace with 21 touchdowns and all but one interception, he threw for another score without an interception against the Seattle Seahawks, to win it 34-24. Spectators are overlooking the fact that Newton has thrown an interception in the second half of the regular season. He threw for two touchdowns that went along with two touchdowns on the ground. The Broncos have the #1 rated defense in the league, but Cam Newton showed that he is able to pick apart a good defense when he ran for a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals- which they only allowed 1 to opposing quarterbacks all season. Winner of Super Bowl 50 In order for Cam Newton to be the MVP of the Super Bowl, Carolina would have to win. They say defense wins games and Denver has the #1 ranked defense in the league in terms of passing yards allowed and ranks #3 in rushing yards allowed per game. However, Denver has not played a quarterback and an offense like Cam Newton and the Panthers. The Carolina offense has racked up more than 500 points in just the regular season along with 80 more points in just the post-season. On the other hand, Denver only scored 90 in 4 of their last games. Manning has relied on the Broncos strong defense and average offense to win their games, but Carolina will make the Broncos turn the ball over at least once. Manning will make sure that the Panthers don’t pull away from them so early, but then again he is facing a strong Panther offense. Panthers will end up pulling away from the Broncos in the second half. The winner of this matchup is going to be the Carolina Panthers. Winner: Carolina Panthers by the score of 34-23
