As the 2015-2016 theater season kicks off, Wilson embarks on a voyage that is anticipated to be hilarious. On October 1, 2, and 3, Wilson Theater Company will perform "Rumors." The show is highly recommended. Everyone favors a fine comedy, but what is it about "Rumors" that causes it to stand above other farcical plays?
"Rumors" was written in 1988 by playwright Neil Simon. Simon wrote it on a rainy day, when he just felt the need to be cheered up. The play is a satire about a dinner party gone wrong. It is Charlie and Myra Brock’s tenth wedding anniversary, but it appears Charlie has shot himself in the head. The Brock’s friends, Ken and Chris Gorman, show up amid chaos, only to find Charlie shot, Myra missing, and the house staff absent. The plot unfolds when more characters show up to the party and figure something is off. The party guests begin to tittle tattle and gossip, coming up with their own hypotheses of what had truly happened to the Brock’s. When another gunshot goes off, the characters are appalled, and there is a chance that the police eventually show up. Grace Yacobowsky, a Junior, and one of the lead actresses, claims it is an even mix of the cast’s talent and the show’s natural, entertaining manner. All of the thespians involved in the show have dedicated a large chunk of time and energy to make the show top notch. Many students work as tech crew members, and their jobs include serving on prop teams, learning sound and lighting boards, and working with costumes. The significance of those who contribute “behind the scenes” is immeasurable. “In 'Rumors,' there is such a dynamic mix of character personalities that just bounce off the walls and will have your stomach pinching from all the laughter,” said Jada Butler, a Senior, and Stage Manager of "Rumors." “I would say the best part is in Act Two when you are introduced to the police officers,” she continued. Director Jody Reppert claims that there were many factors that led to his decision to choose "Rumors" as the first play of the season. “First off, the show is freakin' hilarious. Neil Simon is a classic American author who is a favored genius. The show is all about mistaken identities and door slamming, and revolves around the actors having timing down.” He went on to say that the actors were mastering the timing and it will be an outstanding production. Tickets can be purchased online and at the door on the nights of the shows. The show will be held in the Wilson High School Auditorium.
