By Maggie Foight Question: “Schoolwork + extracurriculars = stress! What is the best way to deal with that type of stress?” Answer: Stressing out too much may not be good for your health, but twenty percent of American teens have to deal with it on a daily basis. Typically, being stressed can result in feeling overwhelmed, experiencing tension, having a higher heart rate, and getting clammy hands. The best way to deal with stress depends on the person, but some of the most effective ways to cope include exercising, limiting caffeine, stepping back from your workload, and getting enough sleep.

I know it is the end of the year and that means that you probably won’t need anymore school advice for a little while. So this month, instead of responding to a problem, as a senior I wanted to give you some advice. Once high school is over, the grades won't follow you. No one will care if you got a 100% on your project in English class. The moment you graduate, it does not matter. But your memories will be with you for the rest of your life. My great-grandmother is still friends with her high school pals. Now she did live in a different time, but my point is don't kill yourself trying to get the grade. You are worth so much. Have fun and don't let school rule you. It's tough to get through school. Give yourself a break every once in awhile.
Sincerely, Me :) Q: I’m not bragging or anything, but I get pretty good grades in my classes. I’ve always been a good student, but for some reason, my grades are not what they used to be. I’m still working the same amount, maybe even more. The problem is my teacher has no idea what she’s talking about half of the time. She can’t explain concepts very well, and whenever we ask questions in class, she kind of just avoids the question. I know she’s trying, but it’s hurting me in the process. I feel like I’m not learning as much as I should be. Please help. Q: I know high school is filled with homework and tests, but now it’s getting to be too much. I’m in my junior year, and honestly, between SATs, AP classes, and extracurriculars, I don’t get any time to breathe anymore. I feel like I’m always stressed out, and with college coming up soon, my stress is getting worse than ever. What should I do so I don’t implode? Q: I have a really busy schedule, and we are starting to do scheduling for next year. I want to take challenging classes and still participate in the extracurriculars I am in, but I don't know which ones to cut? I know my classes should be towards something that I want to do in the future, but I have no idea of what I want to be. Please help! Q: One of my classes just got a new teacher and the first thing he had to do was grade an essay. Because we still had the old teacher when the essay was assigned and many students feel they did not do well, a lot of the kids in my class are saying that he doesn’t grade fairly. I did not do awfully, so I don’t know what to make of it. He doesn’t seem like a bad teacher, but what if my grades start to suffer? Would that be my fault or the teacher’s? Q: Right now I’m failing physics, and my parents are really mad. This grade is keeping me from participating in soccer, which is pretty much the only thing I look forward to. The problem is my teacher is really mean. I’m afraid of asking her questions because I feel like she just won’t help. What am I supposed to do? |
