By Dylan Edelman When it comes to rookie quarterbacks, anything can happen. Some may look great on paper but flop on the field. Others may brag being high picks in the draft but still have to fight tooth and nail just to stay on the roster. Here’s a quick synopsis of the Rookie QB Class of 2016 according to ESPN. Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys proved that an injured Tony Romo may not be such a bad thing for the team. Though he was a fourth round draft pick, this diamond in the rough has won five of his six starts with an impressive QB Rating of 103.9. His stats include 7 TDs, 3 fumbles, and 1 interception. Seeing who will be the starting QB for the Cowboys may be a difficult decision for the coaching staff when Romo gets cleared to play again.
Carson Wentz, the #2 overall pick in the draft, boasts 7 TDs and 3 wins in 5 games for the Philadelphia Eagles. Even with 2 fumbles and 1 interception, Wentz proves that he is an unpredictable force on the field with his 99.9 QB rating. Wentz’s inexperience in professional football has led him to make daring plays that have payed off. Paxton Lynch was a first round draft pick for the Broncos. After Peyton Manning’s legendary career and inevitable retirement after a Super Bowl win for Denver, Lynch has a high standard to live up to. It’s too bad he hasn’t succeeded very well. In 2 starts, he can only claim one win, and that was against Tampa Bay (his one loss was to the 2-4 Chargers). With 2 TDs, 2 fumbles, and 1 interception, his QB rating is 86.3. The Cleveland Browns must be cursed. Their starting rookie QB, Cody Kessler, has lost all four games that he has started in. This third round pick has 4 TDs, 1 interception, but 4 fumbles. Though his QB rating is 93.8, It is surprising that the Browns seems to have no other option but to let Kessler play. Being the #1 overall pick is usually a high honor and lucrative accomplishment. It’s too bad that the top draft pick, Jared Goff, has yet to hit the field for the Rams. Sure, Los Angeles traded up to get Goff, but it seems that head coach Jeff Fisher is steadfast in keeping his starting QB, Case Keenum. It’s a shame, too; Keenum is one of the worst performing quarterbacks in the NFL. It can still be considered somewhat early in the season to assess these rookies. So far, it seems that some are outstanding, while others should just stay out of the game. Only time will tell.
