That night, all seniors on the team would be recognized before the big game in a heartwarming ceremony. This year’s seniors on the team are Goalie Leslie Estrada ( #0), starting Goalie Darcie Jones (#1), Defender Megan Cheng (#6), Outside Midfielder and Striker Courtney Wilkes (#8), Defender Bailey Peck (#18), Defender Kristin Jackson (#23), Center Fielder Ciara Martin (#24) and Defender Jocelyn Keller (#32). All of the seniors walked down the center of the field in John Gurski Stadium with their families. The rest of the soccer team cheered them on while making an aisle for them to walk through.
Right from the start, Mifflin and Wilson were playing a very competitive game. Mifflin had the first shot, but Darcie Jones made an amazing save to keep Mifflin from scoring. Wilson was able to come back and have more shots on target against the Mifflin keeper, Katelyn Dreibelbis, who also saved all shots. Jones was able to make a great save when shot on at 14 minutes but was unfortunately kicked in the stomach during the process. She quickly recovered, and the 0-0 game continued. 16 minutes on the clock, Junior Brianna Depro, (#27) stole the ball from a Mifflin player at mid-field and shot at the keeper with her left foot. Dreibelbis deflected the shot, but not far enough so it wouldn’t land at Junior Emily Magalotti’s (#25) feet. Magalotti took the ball back at the keeper and shot at the bottom right corner of the goal. The ball passed the keeper’s reach and was able to roll into the goal, allowing the Bulldogs to come away from the first half with a 1-0 lead. The tension continued, with the Mustangs fighting with all they had to gain that one goal back. The Bulldogs were able to match the Mustangs’ rigor and keep the ball on the other half of the field. Only 5 minutes into the second half, the weather completely changed on the players. It started to rain, making the field and the ball slippery, yet the players still kept fighting. To make matters worse, 25 minutes into the 40 minute half, all of the lights went off in the stadium. Player’s had to come off of the field and were able to talk to their coaches while waiting for the lights to come back on. 15 minutes later, the lights finally came back on. Both the Mustangs and the Bulldogs went back onto the field and continued the match starting with a drop ball. The last 15 minutes were as tense as they could be, with both teams having multiple shots that were saved by both keepers. Coming down to the last 30 seconds, the ball was at the corner of the Mustangs’ side. The scoreboard buzzed, and the crowd went wild. Even though the game was tense and it seemed like the players were mad at each other, both teams came off and had great sportsmanship, acting as if everything that might have made them mad was left on the field. Another great game played by Wilson and Mifflin, but with the ultimate champion being the Bulldogs, with a 1-0 game.
