By: Kymari Clarke The first half of the game started slowly, as the intensity of the game hadn’t settled yet. Both teams were yet to warm up to each other and no goal was scored by either team. Double overtime was not unexpected going into the second half of the game. “I felt a little nervous, but I knew that if we all put our hearts into it, we could win,” said Miller, after being asked how he felt during the first half. Enter the second half, misty rain soaked Gurski Stadium adding another obstacle for both teams. About 31 minutes in, the ball rolled into the goal, causing an uproar on the Wilson side, only to be disallowed because a Wilson player was said to be blocking the keeper. The crowd was devastated, believing the first goal of the night was scored. “I was upset about it a little bit, but I just kept working,” commented Miller about the moment, “It was our game to win,” he included. The game became even more intense following the beginning of the first overtime. The thunder heard from afar added more of an edge as the crowd started counting down the minutes until the first goal. Hit made by Exeter #22 (Mason Schaeffer) strikes Wilson #7 (Devin Frey) with two minutes left of the first overtime. A foul shot by Exeter #22 (Mason Schaeffer) was also blocked multiple times from the goal from Wilson. “There was no specific person we needed to stop on the opposing team to be successful...we were better than them and we should have beaten them in the first half. We had more possession of the ball,” commented Omar Fofana. With 1:40 left, Wilson attempted to shoot, but was blocked by the Exeter Goal Keeper. The first overtime went rather short, almost ending in a buzzer beater shot from Wilson #12 (Peter Wolf). With 5:14 left in double overtime, Wilson attempted a goal with great effort followed by a saved attempt from Exeter with four minutes left. “We didn’t want to be in double overtime, of course, but we had to win. We knew we were better than that. Exeter needed to start to win games, so we knew we couldn’t let them,” said Fofana. The game heated up, as the next team to score would win the game. Students and parents in the stadium intensely watched the close battle. The game closed with 2:44 left in double overtime resulting in a victory for Wilson, after a goal was scored and Miller kicked off Exeter’s defender. Wilson’s #6 (Alex Schutt) summed up the game afterwards saying, “Exeter is always a tough game. We didn’t expect a walk in the park. Double overtime wasn’t unexpected and we were ready for anything they were going to throw at us. And yes, I believed the entire time, we were going to win the game. That’s a mindset we stay with no matter what. Every single game, when we walk out on that field, we expect to win.”
