By Dylan Edelman Call it déjà vu. The Wilson girls soccer team would be facing Fleetwood again this year, vying for the Berks County Championship. After being rescheduled due to a power outage, first- seeded Wilson took on the sixth-seeded Fleetwood at Exeter’s Don Thomas Stadium in Reiffton. Winning their second straight BCIAA title, Wilson defeated their tenacious rivals 2-0. Dating back to 2006, this was the seventh time that these two teams had competed against each other in the finals. For the first half of the game, Wilson commanded control with minor threats from Fleetwood’s offense. Monopolizing on their possession, the Bulldogs made several attempts to score. With close to 30 minutes left in the half, Jailene DeJesus outplayed her defender, from a throw-in, and kicked a touch pass to Alison Berkel, who torpedoed the ball into the corner of the goal. Fleetwood’s goalie, Makayla Calamita, didn’t stand a chance, though she did end up having nine saves; Toward the end of the half, however, Fleetwood gained possession from a turnover and charged the goal. The shot missed with a wide left, and the Tigers’ attempt was fruitless. The second half mirrored the first. With multiple scoring attempts, Wilson’s offense tried to capitalize on their possessions while the defense held Fleetwood’s pursuits at bay with only three unsuccessful shots on goal. In the 58th minute, a pass from Lexi Burnham to Natalee Vicari secured Wilson’s dominance. Vicari scored Wilson’s second goal by lofting the ball right over the goalie’s head. Celebrations were well deserved for this hardworking and determined team. With little time to rest, the girls team will be aiming to conquer in the upcoming PIAA playoffs.
