By Dylan Edelman For many, it was the Clash of the Titans, Wilson vs. Harrisburg. Both teams are known for their evenly matched potent offense and resolute defense. Both are also experienced playoff teams. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Cougars had a history of winning the previous three of four meetings in the playoffs, including the last two. With a home field advantage, the top-seeded Bulldogs (10-2) were prepared to battle the fourth-seed Cougars (9-3) in the District 3 Class 6A semifinal. In true Bulldog fashion, it came down to the last few seconds of the game, but a valiant effort was put forth by the Wilson Football team. There were no numbers on the scoreboard until the start of the second quarter. With Wilson at the one yard line, junior Mason Lenart scored, capping off a persistent ten play, 67-yard drive and a 7-0 lead for the Bulldogs. The Cougars would not allow the momentum for the Bulldogs to last, though. Harriburg scored, tying the game 7-7. Later in the second, senior running back, Avanti Lockhart, made a 1- yard plunge, grabbing a 14-7 lead for Wilson. The lead was short-lived. Cougars QB, John McNeil, dropped back with a long pass to WR Donte Kent for an 80-yard, one play drive making it 14-14. On fourth and three, Wilson’s Kaleb Brown faked a punt and passed it to Lockhart for a first down. They were now in Cougar territory. On the next play, Brown made a short side pass to Lockart, who broke through defenders, running for 42-yards and a TD. The Bulldogs regained their advantage 21-14. With less than one minute remaining in the first half, McNeil hit Kamere Day for a 42-yard TD. The PAT was blocked, and Wilson headed for the locker room at the half with only a one point margin. In the third quarter, the Cougars made their way into the Wilson’s ten. Harrisburg’s Tymek Everett-Evans barrelled his way through the Bulldog defense to score. After a failed two point conversion, Harrisburg led 26-21. By the fourth quarter, Brown swung out a completed pass to Lockhart, who used a spin move to find the end zone. Wilson completed a successful two-point conversion, thereby regaining the lead 29-26. With less than 3 minutes left in the game, Everett-Evans scored for the Cougars, making it 33-29. The time clock was ticking down when Wilson made it down to Harrisburg’s eleven yard line. Brown tried to pass to WR Matt Fry, but there was a flag on the play, pass interference. The Bulldogs were awarded an untimed down with no time remaining. Spectators sat on the edge of their seats in Gurski Stadium, anticipating a suspenseful end. Brown made a pass to Lockhart. A catch here would have won the game, but the ball bounced off Lockhart’s fingers, ending Wilson's 2019 season.
