By Anadely Lagunas The Wilson Boys Basketball team is back and better than ever. Mid-season, the bulldogs are at a 14-1 record, which sets the pace to possibly be one of their best records since the 2013-2014 winter season. They sit first in their league with Muhlenberg tracing behind behind them with a 11-2 record. Wilson recently had two big wins against both Muhlenberg (67-56) and Reading High (54-38), which are arguably the best teams in the county. Wilson’s top scorer has had a lot to contribute this season. Junior, Stevie Mitchell, became the youngest person in the Wilson Basketball program to reach 1,000 points at the Wilson vs. Pottsville game. The other juniors on the team have also contributed greatly. Shooters Ryan Strobel, Alex Schutt, Andre Young and Tyrell Robinson can be called off the bench and eagerly be ready to score some points for the team. Mykel Huffman, Christopher Vasquez and Richard Wah bring with them an explosive and quick energy. Senior Evin Timochenko, who is another top scorer on the team alongside Stevie Mitchell, has demonstrated great leadership throughout his four years at Wilson High. In his junior year, Kieran Borian came off the bench and now as a senior, he is a starter on Varsity. Avanti Lockhart is a multi-sport athlete who dedicates himself to football in the fall and is ready to jump right into basketball in the winter. Joshua Valle’s athleticism gives him an advantage against other players on the court. His chaotic energy both on and off the court brings a positive energy to the team. Luis Fernandez is a fan favorite as the student section is always heard chanting, “We want LJ!” Alijah Kapaona brings an all around play style to the team. These six hard working seniors are leaving big shoes behind to fill for the 2020-2021 basketball season. This, of course, could not be possible without Matt Coldren leading the team. On December 31st of 2019, Matt Coldren was ranked eighth in all time wins in Berks boys basketball history. With the astounding record the bulldogs currently hold, they are now focusing on winning the county championship and taking it one game at a time.
