By Dylan Edelman This has been a banner year for the citizens of Cleveland. First, the Cavs won the NBA championship, then the Indians made it to the World Series. With those seasons over, the harsh reality of the Browns’ poor performance has brought them ongoing agony. Ten weeks into the NFL season, the Browns have yet to win a game; their 0-10 record is abysmal. What’s the cause behind this lackluster performance? Their quarterback, Robert Griffin III, was signed in late March as a free agent in hopes that he could resurrect their passing game. As fate would have it, RG III sustained a major shoulder injury late in the fourth quarter of week one. He was placed on the injury reserve list and hasn’t played since.
Third round rookie, Cody Kessler, has taken over the starting role. Unfortunately, he has been mediocre at best, along with the five other backup quarterbacks who have tried to light a spark into the team. In conjunction with that, their ex-Pro Bowler, Josh Gordon, started off the season with a hearty four-game suspension and left right after for alcohol rehabilitation, according to hngn.com. He is expected to be traded or released now that he has completed treatment. So far, the Browns have lost two of their most anticipated players in just one week and are hoping to be guided by a quarterback with no professional experience. Even though the odds aren’t in their favor, there still have been some breakout stars from the Cleveland roster. One in particular is their newly-refined wide receiver, Terrelle Pryor. After getting drafted as a quarterback, Pryor fully converted to a receiver after having some unfulfilling first seasons. It really goes to show how good the Browns’ passing game is when their leading receiver used to be a quarterback. The defense isn’t any better - it had a measly 16 total sacks and four forced fumbles in the entire season. Not only that, they are 31st in the league of allowed yards per game and rushing yards per game, as nfl.com reports. At least their low standings will earn them another top spot in the draft for next year. Hopefully, history won’t repeat itself and they will actually get a stand-out player.
