By Kris Jones The NFL offseason has barely even begun and yet, the NFL world is shocked. Why, you say? Well, Seattle running back and the most quotable, yet non-vocal interviewee ever Marshawn Lynch and Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson unofficially announced their retirement from the NFL. As we know, a player’s time in the NFL or any professional sport is never determined, it is never set in stone. Injuries can permanently scar or disable a player for life. Or maybe they retire for personal reasons. As football fans, we get that. But, we still think Marshawn and Calvin can still go at it for a couple of more seasons. Marshawn and Calvin were drafted in 2007 and both went in the first round. Marshawn was drafted to the Bills (not the Seahawks, unknowing Seattle bandwagoners.), and Calvin drafted to the Lions. Both Marshawn and Calvin, if they retired right now, did not make it 10 seasons. Even Patriots All-Pro linebacker Jerod Mayo is joining in the retirement boat with Beast Mode and Megatron. The question is, why do players decide to retire early? The main reason for early retirements are due to a long history of injury or a career-ending spontaneous injury, like the career of former quarterback Daunte Culpepper ending when he tore 4 major ligaments in his knee or legend Michael Irvin’s career. Although Marshawn has never had a career threatening injury, Calvin Johnson has definitely been showing signs of wear and tear throughout his career. After not missing a single game in the 2009 season, Calvin has sat out due to his legs a lot after his perfect attendance record. Luckily, his worst injury was spraining his ACL twice. Marshawn’s last injury was in 2011, where he injured his lower back whilst warming up, thus causing a recurring back injury. Both players are banged up beyond belief, but, most players pop right back up after a serious injury and keep going. But, I see their position to either retire or stay in the league.
Both Marshawn and Calvin are grizzled veterans in the NFL who are possibly deciding to ride off into the sunset early as a benefit to their livelihoods. It seems like yesterday that Marshawn was taking a joyride on a cart as celebration to Cal’s OT win over the Washington Huskies and Calvin Johnson was at Georgia Tech, putting on a show. If these two do decide to retire, the whole NFL fan base will support them and they will leave a huge legacy behind them. But, it is for the best that they think about their health first and football second.
