By: Dylan Edelman After an epic fourth quarter recovery, the Kansas City Chiefs triumphantly won their first Super Bowl title in 50 years against the San Francisco 49ers. Both teams came out strong. The first half of the game was back and forth between both sides. The Chiefs ended the first quarter with a four point lead, but the 49ers quickly bounced back to tie the game at 10 heading into halftime. San Francisco tried to capitalize after the half, scoring 10 unanswered points bringing their lead to 20-10. By the beginning of the fourth quarter, it appeared that the 49ers had the momentum to go all of the way. Or so it seemed. Due to their phenomenal pass rush and running game, the 49ers were a different beast. For much of the game, they commanded the Chiefs. Down 10 with less than nine minutes to go, it seemed like Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes could not breach the 49ers’ defensive front. The game-changing play happened on 3rd-and-15, when Mahomes completed a 44-yard pass to a wide open WR Tyreek Hill. It was the first major crack in San Francisco’s defense. Four plays later, the Chiefs scored a touchdown, then quickly forced the 49ers to punt. Remarkably, in the last several minutes of the game, the Chiefs began to ravage 21 consecutive points from the 49ers, winning Super Bowl LIV by a final score of 31-20. The Kansas City Chiefs are not only the latest Super Bowl champions, but they should also be considered the “Comeback Kings.” For the Chiefs, it was their third straight comeback in the playoffs. In the divisional round, the Chiefs trailed 24-0 against the Texans only to recover with a 51-31 win. In the AFC Championship Game, the Titans led 17-7 in the second quarter but promptly faltered, losing to Kansas City 35-24. Finishing the game with 26 completions on 42 attempts for 286 yards, two touchdowns and rushing 29 yards for a touchdown, Mahomes was the obvious choice for the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award (MVP). The game also delivered Coach Andy Reid and Wilson Alumni, Chad Henne, their first career Super Bowl victories.
