The Rams came into the big dance with a divisional round victory over the Dallas Cowboys and a highly controversial upset win over the New Orleans Saints. Los Angeles’ cornerback Nickell Roby-Coleman interfered with Saints wide receiver Tommylee Lewis late in the fourth quarter but was blatantly missed by the referees. New Orleans subsequently had to settle for a field goal instead of scoring a touchdown to pull away from the Rams. LA tied the NFC Championship with less than a minute left and forced overtime. Future Hall of Fame QB Drew Brees was hit as he went to throw and threw a very costly interception to John Johnson of the Rams. Moments later, the NFC Champion was crowned as the Rams kicked a game winning field goal, resulting in one of the most controversial endings in the history of the NFL.
Second year QB Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs came into the AFC Championship game looking to dethrone Tom Brady, one of the best QBs of all time looking to reach his ninth Super Bowl appearance in his outstanding career. Brady drove the Patriots offense down the field late in the fourth quarter to grab the lead on a Rex Burkhead touchdown. With under a minute to go in the AFC Championship, Mahomes quickly led the Chiefs to a game tying field goal to send the game to overtime. The Patriots won the coin toss and received the opening kickoff of overtime, ultimately driving down the field and winning the game 37-31 on a Burkhead touchdown. After two weeks of preparation for the Super Bowl after winning their respective conference championships, the Patriots and Rams were ready for the biggest stage in football, the Super Bowl. A defensive led game proved to be too much for the high powered Rams’ offense, as third year quarterback Jared Goff struggled against one of the best sports dynasties in sports history. A fourth quarter touchdown by rookie running back Sony Michel, the only touchdown of the game, gave the Patriots enough to win the franchise’s sixth Super Bowl. All of these Super Bowl titles have been under head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. The Patriots 13-3 win over the Rams turns the page on the NFL calendar, heading into a five month long offseason until training camp kicks off for NFL teams in July.
