On Feb. 23, 2019, the Flyers and the Penguins played at the Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Eagles, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the 2019 Stadium Series.
The National Hockey League’s Stadium Series is a regular season game played outdoors, typically in a baseball or football stadium. Every year, a stadium is selected and two teams get the opportunity to play an old-fashioned game of ice hockey on a rink that is set up overtop of the field. They then play an average game that is incorporated into their season. This Stadium Series, 69,696 fans attended to support their favorite team. Everyone anticipated a snowy game to compliment the winter season; however, to their disappointment, temperatures rose and the game was played in the rain. Luckily, this did not lower the energy level of the rowdy and enthusiastic crowd. The Penguins tormented the Flyers from the start as Crosby, the Penguin’s captain, scored the first goal of the game during the 1st period. However, shortly after, Couturier tied the game, making it 1-1. Late in the 1st period, Flyer’s player, Simmonds, plowed a Penguin, Dumoulin, into the boards. He dropped to the ice, which triggered numerous players, pulling them into a fight. Simmonds received a two-minute penalty and Dumoulin was taken off of the ice due to a concussion, along with another Penguins player, Letang, who was assessed for upper body injuries. After seven minutes of the 2nd period, Schultz, a Penguin, sent the puck to the boards and it bounced back to him immediately. In response, he rebounded it to make the game 2-1. Moving on to the 3rd period, Malkin scores for Pittsburgh, making the game 3-1. The puck bounced off of the glove of Philadelphia goalie, Elliot, which then bounced off of his leg and into the goal. Close to the end of the final period, Flyer’s player, James van Riemsdyk, scored a goal; however, the Pittsburgh coach challenged for an interference with their goalie, Murray. After review, the goal was declared valid, making the score 3-2 Pittsburgh. With three minutes remaining, the game continued and the crowd was riled up with hopeful energy. Philadelphia eventually pulled their goalie, Elliott, for an extra player. With 19.7 seconds to go, Voracek scores and ties the game at 3-3. The crowd went wild and couldn’t keep themselves from jumping out of their seats, knowing overtime was on the horizon. Three minutes and 30 seconds into overtime, Elliott made a fantastic save on the Penguin’s player, Kessel, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats. The Flyers accelerate and dropping the puck off for Giroux to take down the ice and score at three minutes and one second. The game ended with a final score of 4-3 Flyers. The elated audience left the stadium with great satisfaction in the outcome of the game. For many, this was a game to remember as they gloried over the success of their team.
