By Dylan Edelman Football fans will be snapping themselves out of their winter windrawl. In a few short weeks, the 2017 NFL Draft heads to the City of Brotherly Love. Beginning on Thursday, April 27th, the first round draft picks will be the talk of pigskin aficionados. As media outlets and potential pro players head down Ben Franklin Highway, it will be interesting to see who makes the top 5.
Cleveland has the first pick. They are in dire need of a quarterback, but it seems like this class of draft picks for QB’s is weak. More than likely, the Browns will pick Myles Garrett, a defensive end from Texas A&M. According to NFL.com combine reports, Garrett is an “elite edge rusher who possesses rare explosiveness and fluid-movement skills and agility.” Hopefully this potential rookie will be the lucky charm that Cleveland needs to stifle its bad luck. The second pick goes to San Francisco, who hope to regain their stature as a top team, like they were only a few years ago. Jamal Adams, a safety from LSU would be an optimum choice because the 49er’s gave up a lot of big plays last year. As an astute pattern reader, having Adams on the roster would greatly benefit the 49er’s defense. Solomon Thomas, the defensive end from Stanford, will probably be Chicago’s pick as they go third. After Thomas won the Morris Trophy as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2016 and received multiple All-American honors, his outstanding performance and stats piqued a lot of professional scouting interest. Desperate for a good running back, the fourth pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars should be Leonard Fournette, from LSU. With the speed of a receiver and the size of a linebacker, Fournette has proven that he can efficiently plow through tackle attempts. With the fifth pick and 2 first round draft picks overall, the Titans can potentially do some damage next season. A player like Corey Davis, a wide receiver from Western Michigan, could complement their current roster which includes QB Marcus Mariota and RB Demarco Murray. As cbssports.com reports, Davis missed the combine after having surgery to repair two torn ligaments in his ankle this January, but he is still in contention to be a top pick. There will always be surprises and disappointments during the NFL draft. Last minute trades for picks and players always seem to add suspense to the process.
