By Kris Jones As we all know, many football fans suffer from the dreaded affliction known as “post-Super Bowl-depression”. It’s that feeling every football fan gets after the Superbowl is over, the festivities are done and the teams get a well-deserved break. But, there is a ray of hope for football fans is on the horizon, and it is called Major League Football, or the MLFB. The company doesn’t have anything set in stone as of yet, but people may wonder “what in the world is MLFB?” Well, luckily, here is a bit of an explanation. The MLFB is a spring and summer alternative to the NFL, filling the void that Roger Goodell and his crew leave, and is owned by former NFL wide receiver, Wes Chandler. The league believes they will “answer the demands for a spring professional football league that’s explosive, innovative and focused on the fan experience,” via MLFBMedia.com. Personally, I have never heard of a quote-unquote “demand” for a spring football league, but, apparently some people really, emphasis on really, want football to be on year round. But, enough of the business stuff, let’s get to the league setup. The league currently has only 8 teams to start the league that plays 10 games per team. The league will also have 40 regular season games total and only 3 playoff games. Since the MLFB will be a spring through summer league, it will start in April and end in July, filling the void until the NFL preseason and will air on the American Sports Network until they get a better deal.
The draft setup for the league is very interesting. It’s not just 7 rounds and then the draft is done, this league has 3 phases of drafting and a regular snake style to the draft. The Franchise Player round is where all of the teams pick the best available player for their team. The first official draft pick of MLFB history was franchise player Joe Adams, the wide receiver and kick returner from Arkansas. Then, the draft goes into its Territorial Draft phase. In this phase, the coaches are expected to make 40 selections to make the team have 41 players. The last phase is the National Draft phase, making the total amount of players on each team 75 players and making the draft 70 rounds. The league is currently holding its free agency phase. Another interesting aspect is the MLFB formally claimed it will not compete with the NFL. It’s a smart move, but, if a business does not take risks, the business will remain small, right? Many might claim that the MLFB will just be a the NFL’s development league like NFL Europe, but, I think this league can succeed. It’s an interesting concept and hopefully, this isn’t just some mad experiment like Vince McMahon’s XFL (which died after 2 seasons). So, it is suggested to keep a close eye on the MLFB, as it might become your home for football after the NFL takes a lengthy break.
