By Maggie Foight Wilson’s triple-A swim team competed at PIAA’s state championships on March 18th and 19th. This was the final meet for high school swimming this season, and the Bulldogs fought hard. The first event, the 200-yard medley relay, started both the girls’ and boys’ teams off well. Each placed in the top fifteen relays. The girls’ relay was comprised of Emma Appler (freshman, backstroke), Julia Cortazzo (sophomore, breaststroke), Natalie Tasca (senior, butterfly), and Carolyn Pitorak (freshman, freestyle). Alexander Vottero (junior, backstroke), Matthew Eisenberg (junior, breaststroke), Andrew Sillhart (junior, butterfly), and Harrison Hunsberger (junior, freestyle) made up the boys’ relay. Laura Rockett (senior) competed in the first individual event for girls: the 200-yard freestyle. She started off strong and kept a great pace throughout.
Sophomores Caleb Eberly and Sophia Appler both swam the 50-yard freestyle. Eberly dropped two-tenths of a second (21.55 seconds) and placed nineteenth while Appler placed fifth and made the podium. Next up was the 100-yard butterfly race. Sillhart competed for the second time here, and he placed within the top twenty-five. The 100-yard freestyle was to follow. Sophia Appler returned for her own second event, and she did well, placing in the top fifteen. Quite a few swimmers on the Wilson team swam several events: Rockett swam the 500-yard freestyle, the longest event, as well. She dropped nearly a second, nearly at the five minute mark (5:01.16). Donovan Curran (sophomore) represented the boys in this event: he swam his time, nearly down to the tenths. Four-swimmer team races returned in the middle of the meet with the 200-yard freestyle relay. Wilson girls stepped up and placed eighth with Sophia Appler leading off, followed by Tasca, Pitorak, and Alyssa Bubel (junior). Wilson boys followed with the team of Eberly, Hunsberger, Jack Werner (junior), and Malachi Eberly (freshman), placing thirteenth. The weekend ended with the sixteen-lap race, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The girls’ team, consisting of Sophia Appler, Carly Campion (sophomore), Rockett, and Bubel, as well as the boys’ team (Caleb Eberly, Malachi Eberly, Werner, and Vottero), finished fifteenth. Congratulations to all of Wilson’s state qualifiers, and good luck in future seasons!
