By Kris Jones Oh, Chip Kelly, how far you have fallen. From hope in the ESPN acclaimed “sports purgatory” to the laughingstock of the entire city of Philadelphia. For those who do not know Chip Kelly, here’s a bit of backstory of the man himself. Chip was a nationally acclaimed college coach who coached the Oregon Ducks and Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota. After former Eagles head coach Andy Reid was fired from the team due to poor performance, who would be hired to replace Andy? Well, Chip Kelly, of course. After a course of good seasons with the Ducks, Chip jumped at the offer to coach on the professional stage. After Chip came to the Eagles, the hopes of thousands upon thousands of Eagles fans across the country were fueled with dreams of glory and a Super Bowl title. To be honest, the dreams were not that far off during Chip’s first two seasons with the team. The Eagles were surprisingly 10-6 with Chip at the helm for two seasons. People thought the Eagles were actually going places with him. Then, the off season happened. First mistake was trading away LeSean McCoy for Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso. Then, McCoy framed coach Kelly for “trading away all of the black players”, and histeria ensued over Chip Kelly possibly being racist. That was unfortunately scandal number 1 of this season. DeMarco Murray, known for being Dallas’ golden boy for running backs, was traded to the Eagles in a shocking move by coach Kelly. Sure, the O-line was better in Philly, but, look at Murray’s rush stats for this season. In summary, the stats are absolutely dreadful compared to his Cowboy stats. But, under new coach Doug Pederson, he could return to being that golden boy the Cowboys had. Another shock is trading away Nick Foles and bringing in Sam Bradford. Like it was a cycle, the mentioned of Philly’s O-line was uttered. Bradford, in a professional opinion, was actually decent with the Eagles. Not a game changer for the Eagles, but, decent nonetheless. The game that really sealed the fact that coach Kelly was going to be handed a pink slip was the Thanksgiving game against the Lions. The Eagles were just, in the lack of a better term, lousy. Matthew Stafford was basically showing off his arm against an abysmal Eagles defense. Then, three weeks later, ESPN was alight with “Breaking News: Chip Kelly fired after 3 seasons.” You couldn’t go two seconds without hearing his name. It was like when Lebron was going back to Cleveland. But, things are looking up for poor old Chip. He was recently hired by the San Francisco 49ers, which in itself is a risk. The Eagles have also found a replacement at head coach in Doug Pederson, Kansas City’s offensive coordinator. In my opinion, Chip peaked way too early. Leading the Eagles to two consecutive winning seasons and now he is miles away from his home team. I personally think that Chip’s a nice guy, but, he won’t turn a team in the right direction. Good luck, Chip Kelly, you’re going to need it.
