There was much speculation about who could win the ATP Finals tournament, as there were many first-timers such as “Next Gen” studs Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem, as well as veterans Kevin Anderson and John Isner, who tackled the tournament regulars of Federer, Cilic, and Kei Nishikori.
After the Round Robin group matches, the semifinals hosted enticing matchups of Zverev vs Federer and Djokovic vs Anderson. While Djokovic cruised by Anderson with a 6-2 6-2 win, Zverev sneaked by Federer in an amazing match with a score of 7-5 7-6(5). The championship match between Djokovic and Zverev had tons of storylines: can the youngster beat the legend? Can Djokovic continue his white-hot streak? Eventually, the day came, and Zverev played better tennis, beating Djokovic 6-4 6-3. Zverev finally got his ever-so-elusive big title win, as he has been criticized for underperforming in Grand Slams, and showed the world his potential by routing Djokovic in the final. This win was Zverev’s 4th title win this year and his 10th career tournament win. While Zverev won the ATP Finals, we should not forget Djokovic’s outstanding year. He fell all the way out of the top-20, and eventually tore it up the second half of the season, winning Wimbledon and the US Open to regain the number one ranking. It was an outstanding comeback, one that mirrors much of Federer’s outstanding comeback in 2017. With the youngsters like Zverev and Thiem showing their potential, along with the revival of Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer, who knows what 2019 holds in store for all of us.
