By Kris Jones Yes, the girls’ basketball team plays Exeter on January 28 and yes, that’s a month from now. But, that’s not the reason why this will probably be the most exciting and the possible game of the season for the girls. It is because Exeter is one of our rivals and the game supports Mini-Thon. Many people do not believe Exeter to be one of our main rivals because of Governor Mifflin and our intense rivalry. But, many people do not know of our little rivalry between Exeter. The reason why I think Wilson and Exeter are rivals is because of the history of results. One game goes to Exeter, the other to Wilson and the cycle continues. Both teams are looking to constantly defeat the other, which in turn, will constantly produce more and more tight games, which will always bring in the crowds. Since Exeter is starting off the season at a snail’s pace, the Bulldogs should try to capitalize on Exeter’s poor form. Exeter’s girls average about 42.7 points per game while the opponents average about 59.7 points. That’s a big margin. But, a girl who is trying to cut that margin is Abby Mengel. Abby, through the 0-3 start of the Eagles season, made a total of 18 field goals and is currently leading the team. So, the Eagles have a dangerous sharpshooter in the ranks, but, what about the Bulldogs? Well, they do have a hidden sharpshooter on the team in Kelly Ebner. Out of two games played, Kelly made 11 field goals. Not as much as Mengel, but, the game could be a splash contest with these two on the court. It’s going to be like Stephen Curry vs Klay Thompson here in Wilson with these two.
Another reason why this game is important is because most of the proceeds from the game support our Mini-Thon that is being held a couple of days after the game. For those who do not know what a Mini-Thon is, I’ll explain. A Mini-Thon is a derivative of Penn State’s Thon, which is a 24 hour non-stop dance party, a Mini-Thon is shorter at 12 hours. The dance party does serve a purpose, to help families dealing with children with cancer. Even though I can’t dance to save my life, I will and always will support Thon, Mini-Thon and the Four Diamonds foundation because I was personally affected by cancer. But, that’s a story for another time. At the event, there is going to be a shootout between Coach Melograna and Coach Coldren versus Christian Sload and Jake DeBooth. In my opinion, I think the dream team of Coldren and Melograna is going to take it all. But, I might be wrong about that. Connected to the shootout is the 50/50 raffle. The raffle is a bet on who is going to win the shooting contest. Half of the money goes to the winners and the other half goes to the Four Diamonds and Mini-Thon. So, it’s a splash contest for a good cause. All and all, it is going to be a great game for a great cause. So, I encourage everyone to come out and support our Bulldogs against the Eagles. Let’s keep this momentum going.
