By: Olivia Monos The last time these two opponents played each other at the Australian Open, the match lasted over five hours. Both are formidable players, so the tennis world expected to see tennis at the highest level between two fiercely competitive opponents with very different styles.
But what they received was Djokovic playing the best tennis of his life. No one was more stunned than Nadal. Nadal was unable to win one set from Djokovic, which has never happened to Nadal. The match lasted approximately two hours and Djokovic made history by winning his seventh Australian Open, despite having surgery just 12 months earlier. Nadal, the ultimate tennis sportsman and player, acknowledged that Djokovic played “unbelievable” tennis during the final and was unable to successfully compete against Djokovic that night, assuring everyone that he would focus on his high-level defensive game to win his next title. For the women’s finals, the world was waiting to see a rematch between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka after the controversial U.S. Open that Osaka won. But that did not happen; Serena was knocked out of the finals, despite playing great tennis and once again Osaka was vying for the number one spot in the world. The women’s finals ended up being between Osaka and Petra Kvitova. It was a tennis match with many unexpected turns and many people rooting for Kvitova, who three years earlier was stabbed in her playing hand fighting off an attacker during a home invasion. Facing hours of surgery and months of rehabilitation to make it to the finals was nothing short of a miracle. Kvitova said she was just so happy to hold a racket again, after being through such a horrific ordeal. It was a great match with both competitors playing high-level tennis. Throughout each set, the players both took turns rallying, capturing points and winning service points. Osaka eventually won, becoming the new world No.1 for female tennis.
