By James Brennan The world has not seen Tiger Woods play a round of golf since August of 2015. For all of his fans out there - and there are a lot of you - you get to see him back in action on October 13th at the Safeway Open. Tiger has already tried to make multiple comebacks in the past couple of years, but they have all been derailed by many injuries. Tiger said after his back surgery that he tried to fight through the pain, but it was too much for him to play. It all started when he he had a stress fracture in his left tibia in April of 2008, and it has only been downhill from there. From then until now, he has had many problems with his knees and back that have caused him to play in only 18 tournaments from 2014 until now. Hopefully this time it will be different because Tiger makes watching golf a lot more exciting. If he could even get back to at least half of what he was when he was in his prime, he will be a contender for almost every tournament he plays in. Also, Tiger Woods is like the Lebron James or Peyton Manning of golf on terms of being idolized. Many kids in my generation look up to Tiger and were inspired to golf because of him. Not only to do Tiger's fans love him, but TV companies do too. Tiger's comeback will definitely help the TV ratings for golf. Back in 2014, when Tiger played, the ratings were higher than an NBA Finals game. Also, from 2007 to 2009, there were 21 different times where a golf telecast had a 4.00 rating or better, and Tiger was involved in everyone of them. However, when Tiger didn't play in the 2008 PGA Championship, the ratings were one-third of what they were when he played in the 2009 PGA. TV companies have to be grateful that Tiger is returning because he is a ratings machine. Tiger returning brings many positives to the game, but will he be able to get back to his old self? Let's just hope that Tiger can finally turn it around and stay healthy because he does not have that many seasons left in him.

By Dylan Edelman What happens in Vegas stays there, but is Sin City ready for an NFL team? The Oakland Raiders are potentially in search for a new home and Las Vegas could be at the top of their list. With a population of over 2 million, according to the city’s Chamber of Commerce, the area could be a prime spot to support a professional team. Already planned to get a 2017 NHL expansion team, sport fans in Nevada may be wanting more. From its AFL birth in the 1960s, Oakland has become the iconic home to the Raiders. Although they struggled but by the 1970s, the Silver and Black proved themselves by winning Super Bowl XI. In the 80s, owner Al Davis fought to get improvements made to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, but, his requests were denied. Davis then moved the team to Los Angeles, where they played for 12 years. As the Raiders slowly learned, LA was not the home for them. As a result, they returned home to a newly renovated stadium and loyal fans in Oakland. Now, the Raiders are looking for a new city yet again. This past January, the rumors hinted to cities like San Antonio, Sacramento, and even San Diego, but as of August 2016, it seems as if Las Vegas may just be the answer. Vegas has been the perfect spot to host major headlining boxing bouts, MMA championships, Nascar races, and PGA golf tournaments. These events are easy sell outs, but can Vegas promise the same ticket sale return for an NFL team? Currently, Vegas has a thriving tourism industry, along with a slew of innovative hotels, attractions, and shows. While Vegas allows legalized sports betting, most major professional sport leagues have strict anti-gambling policies. Even concerns from gambling to drugs to prostitution expose the never-ending temptations there are. These distractions may ultimately get players in potential trouble with the league. Money talks, though, and the city certainly has the potential to build the Raiders a state of the art stadium. But, can it fill the seats with loyal fans like they have in Oakland? By Kris Jones It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, not Christmas. I’m talking about the start of football season. Get out your face paint, jerseys, and team paraphernalia - and get ready for a lot of smack talk about your favorite team. The NFL, college, and high school football seasons are already off to a hot start. In the NFL, there is no shortage of storylines, and we haven’t even reached week 10 yet; there’s the whole Teddy Bridgewater incident, Sam Bradford to the Vikings, Tony Romo’s injury... the list goes on. One of the top stories is certainly the Sam Bradford story. The Vikings traded away a first round 2017 pick and a fourth round 2018 pick for Sam Bradford, leaving many fans collectively scratching their heads. Two picks that might be potential stars all for… Sam Bradford. The quarterback situation is very rocky in Minnesota with Teddy Bridgewater injured, but really, Sam Bradford? There were many options the Vikings had with trade targets, but Bradford will do for them. In college news, there were a lot of upsets and no surprise games in this year's kickoff. LSU surprisingly fell to Wisconsin in a 16-14 defensive battle. This game will be remembered on how it ended, though. Wisconsin safety D’Cota Dixon intercepted the ball from LSU quarterback Brandon Harris with 57 seconds left in the fourth. As D’Cota was celebrating, LSU guard Josh Boutte decked him with possibly the most savage hit of this season. A flagrant foul was called and Boutte was ejected from the game; he was later suspended. The game that disappointed the most was the USC and Alabama game. Many thought it was going to be a slugfest from both sides - but that game was all Alabama. The Tide won in impressive fashion with a 52-6 victory. Now, for what we all here in Wilson are excited about. The start of another season of domination from Wilson football. After a close 14-10 win over Warwick, it looks like the Bulldogs roster is already in midseason form. According to many, Ignacio Reynoso is a number one player to watch this season. He has impressed because he is a power back who shows above average speed. He is somewhat reminiscent of Marshawn Lynch, to be honest. Ignacio fights for yards, is not afraid of contact and uses some fancy footwork to fool defenders. Other players to watch this season are seniors Leo Quigley and Foday Jalloh. Both are hard hitting linebackers who can stop the run on a dime and prevent the quarterback from getting any breathing room by using their athletic frames to shed blocks. They also excel at keeping their zone locked up tight as well. The amount of storylines across the country could amount for an interesting season this year. Keep your eyes on the field this year, because this is going to be an enthralling football season. |
