Before the game even began, the Bears were perceived to win, with a chance right at kickoff. During the first quarter, Jake Elliott, the Eagles’ kicker, made a 43-yard field goal. In the second quarter, Parkey made two field goals for the Bears, one being 47 yards and the other being from 29 yards.
In the third quarter, Dallas Goedert, the Eagles’ backup tight end, scored a touchdown with a ten-yard pass from Nick Foles, and Elliott booted in the extra point. In the fourth quarter, Parkey made a 34-yard field goal, and later, Trubisky threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Allen Robinson, but their two-point conversion failed. With a minute left in the game, Foles had one last chance to make his magic happen. He threw pass-after-pass down the field until he hit wide receiver Golden Tate for a two-yard touchdown on fourth down. Despite missing the two-point conversion, Philly was ahead 16-15. After the touchdown, the ball went back to the Bears and they moved it downfield. On third down, Trubisky’s pass was incomplete to Anthony Miller, and on comes kicker Cody Parkey to try the 43-yard field goal to win the game. Parkey lined up the ball, and right before he kicked it, the Eagles called a timeout. Parkey’s kick was good, but it did not count. Parkey trotted back on the field for the second attempt. The ball was snapped, held, and Parkey kicked it. It spun in the air until it hit the left upright, bounced off the crossbar, and fell no good. The Bears lost. On the field, it was at first called a missed field goal, but it later came out that it was blocked by Eagles’ defensive lineman Treyvon Hester. This missed field goal not only knocked the Bears out of the playoffs, but it also caused a lot of backlash towards Parkey. According to FanBuzz news, Cody Parkey and his own family were receiving death threats from angry Bears fans. They claimed that their beloved team’s loss was all due to Parkey’s blocked kick. These angered fans took to harassing Parkey and his family to ease their disappointment and to blame someone for the situation. The Bears fans were extremely angry; however, the Eagles fans were ecstatic. These fans also took to making direct contact with Parkey in relations to their team's recent victory. According to CBS Sports, Eagles fans began sending Parkey money via Venmo in order to thank him for the win. Both sets of fans are taking their differing emotions extremely far because of one missed field goal. This one mistake Parkey made caused him to be harassed throughout the whole nation.
