By: Dylan Edelman With quarterbacks being known as the leader of the offense, it is only fair to talk about the actions taken with them in team moves and signing deals. After a miraculous playoff run by the Minnesota Vikings (13-3), they decided not to resign Case Keenum to another deal at the end of the year. With no team association, Keenum signed with the Broncos for a two-year, $36 million contract in a much needed roll for the offensive flustered team.
The Kansas City Chiefs chose to trade veteran QB Alex Smith in a trade for a 3rd round pick in the 2018 draft and CB Kendall Fuller to the Washington Redskins, even after a 10-6 season last year. This trade eventually led to another signing for the previous Redskins QB, Kirk Cousins, who finalized a three-year, $84 million contract to the Vikings. In other news, an elongated signing deal between Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints came to an end after a short stay in free agency. It finished with a two-year, $20 million extension, thus starting Drew Brees’ 18th season in the NFL and 13th one as a Saint. Now we move on to some more big trades that could definitely be a help to other team’s performances this year. Even though the LA Rams had a double-digit win season last year, it didn’t hurt for them to go for some huge pickups. With newly acquired defensive stars and veterans like: Marcus Peters, Ndamukong Suh and Aqib Talib, they are going to be looking fierce with a strong backfield and enhanced front line. Along with the topic of big defensive moves, the 49ers have taken Richard Sherman on a three-year, $39 million deal after being cut by the rivaled Seattle Seahawks, ushering the end of an era for Seattle’s “Legion of Boom.” With lots of defensive backs switching teams, the injury-prone safety Tyrann Mathieu joins the club with a one-year, $7 million contract to the Houston Texans. Maybe this will be the time he could finally live up to his promising career that had been sidelined by two torn ACLs and an LCL over his five years in the league. Now for the opposite side of the ball, WR Jarvis Landry becomes a Brown with a trade between the Miami Dolphins for two mid-to-late round draft picks in the 2018 and 2019 NFL Draft. Maybe Cleveland is one step closer to achieving that elusive win they have so desperately wanted for two seasons. Speaking about wins, the Rams are still looking for some more with a trade to the Patriots for wide receiver Brandin Cooks, now looking to upgrade their throwing game to hopefully scare teams on both rushing and passing. In addition to the release of Jordy Nelson, the Green Bay Packers, in turn, pick up the experience TE Jimmy Graham after a couple-years stint with the Seahawks for $30 million in three years. I guess we truly won’t know how much these changes will impact their new teams until we see these stars on the field.
