By: Rian Long In the American League, the regular season’s best team was the Boston Red Sox, who finished the regular season 108-54. They clashed up against the defending World Series Champion Houston Astros.
Boston was led by great offensive performances and timely starting pitching all season as they carried their hot bats into their highly anticipated first round matchup against the New York Yankees. The Red Sox were led by Designated Hitter JD Martinez, who finished the Red Sox’ 3-1 series with a .357 batting average and six runs batted in. Martinez, along with teammates Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Steven Pearce and Andrew Benintendi, went up against the Astros and their star-studded pitching staff. The Stros’ pitching staff, led by Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole and Dallas Keuchel, easily took care of business in their ALDS matchup against the Cleveland Indians as they swept them in three games. The Astros were led on offense by emerging star Alex Bregman, who finished the 2018 campaign with a batting average of .286, 31 home runs and 103 runs batted in. In the National League, the 2017 National League Champion Los Angeles Dodgers took on the underdog Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers, who finished the season as National League West Champions with a 92-71 record, will be led by three-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw and midsummer acquisition Manny Machado. Machado, who played the first half of the season with the Baltimore Orioles, finished with thirteen home runs in the second half of the season with LA. The Brewers, considered by many to be one of the most surprising teams this year, were led by MVP candidate Christian Yelich, who had a .326 batting average with 36 home runs and 100 RBIs. The league championship series ended with the Dodgers and the Red Sox playing amazing baseball and moving on to the grand stage: the World Series. This exciting World Series matchup lived up to its hype despite the Red Sox winning the series handily 4-1. This World Series win marked the ninth time Boston has won the championship.
