By Kris Jones Another college basketball season has finally come to a close with the Carolinas bringing home the men’s and women’s titles. The South Carolina women’s team grinded out a 67-55 win against the now infamous Mississippi State women’s team. The Mississippi State team had to go through possibly one of the greatest women’s team to date, the UConn Huskies. The Huskies had a 111 game winning streak, gaining some huge press for the squad. You read that right, a one hundred and eleven game win streak. It was among the greatest in sports, and in many other’s opinions, it could not have gone out in a better way. Let’s set the scene: March 31st, NCAA women’s tournament semi-final in Phoenix. The Bulldogs are tied with the Huskies 64 all. 8 seconds left on the clock. Guard Morgan Williams has the ball and rockets down the court. She attempts a shot in the paint at the buzzer. And she sticks the landing. Basically everyone not a Uconn fan storms the court like it was a battlefield to congratulate the Bulldogs guard. Final score: Mississippi State 66, Uconn 64.
One more hurdle and the Bulldogs would become national champions. If it weren’t for the Gamecocks and forward A’ja Wilson. The Gamecocks really stuck with the momentum the men’s team was having at the moment and made into their own. Wilson had 23 points and 10 rebounds and was the anchor for a team who started out slow in the beginning of the season. The Gamecocks also gave coach Dawn Staley her first championship, after she had failed to capture one herself as a player for the Virginia Lady Cavaliers. She even had a welcoming party in North Philly. Great, and very well deserved, win for the Lady Gamecocks. Here’s to next year. The men’s tournament pitted another Bulldog team, this time Gonzaga, against the North Carolina Tar Heels. As we all remember, the Tar Heels did reach the national title game last year, but, with a last second jumper from Villanova’s Kris Jenkins, the Tar Heels’ season went down with a sickening thud. Now with a new year and a lust for revenge on their side, the Tar Heels reached the pinnacle again this year, the national title game. This time, it would be first seed versus first seed. After Gonzaga beat the true cinderella of the tournament, which was South Carolina, the Zags set their sights on their first national title in the school’s history. After a 32-1 regular season, it looked like they were going to do a “Title or Bust” run of the tournament. Unfortunately, the Zag’s season ended with a bust after UNC’s Joel Berry III gave a top performance against the team with 22 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists. The Heels won their 6th title with a 71-65 score. Thus marks the end of another eventful college basketball season with the Carolinas taking both titles. The road to next season starts now.
